چکیده

T HE minimum calcium requirement of growing rabbits has not been determined. In practice dietary calcium levels have been based largely on information gained from other animals. Commercial rabbit diets commonly contain 0.8 to 1.0% calcium. Since the domestic rabbit is extensively used as an experimental animal and is increasingly used as a source of edible meat, particularly in the Los Angeles and New York City areas, an understanding of the calcium nutrition of the rabbit is desirable. The minimum dietary phosphorus requirement of the growing rabbit has been found by Mathieu and Smith (1961) to be approximately 0.22% of the diet.

Influence of elevated ambient temperature upon some physiological measurements of New Zealand White rabbits

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of heat stress (i.e., elevated ambient temperature – Ta; 36 °C ± 3 °C) on growth performance, mortality rate, and on some haematological and biochemical parameters in different categories of gender and age of New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits. Animals were divided into two main groups (control and treatment), in each group there were 56 rabbits: ...

Effect of Calcium Channel Blockers on Intraocular Pressure in Rabbits

The objective of the study was to evaluate the antiglaucoma effect of calcium channel blockers diltiazem and verapamil. Albino rabbits were used and chronic glaucoma was induced in them using freshly prepared 150 units of alphachymotrypsin. 0.1 mL of drug solution was administered topically into the left eye whereas the right served as control. The pressure recording was carried out at 15, 30, ...

Royal jelly: can it reduce physiological strain of growing rabbits under Egyptian summer conditions?

Exposure of growing rabbits to heat stress during summer adversely affects their performance leading to major production losses. A total number of 48 rabbits, unsexed V-line weaned rabbits, were randomly divided into four experimental groups, temperature ranged from high at 32°C to low at 23°C. Animals of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th group were individually orally given 200, 400 or 800 mg royal jelly (...

The Nature of the Disease Due to the Exclu- Sive Diet of Oats in Guinea Pigs and Rabbits

The subject of the present paper was suggested by the investigations of Morgen and Beger,’ who fed rabbits on a diet composed wholly of oats. Their results coincided with those obtained by other authors2 who also were unable to keep these animals alive for more than a few months. To overcome this they added certain inorganic salts to the diet. Sodium chloride was found to stimulate the food int...
